A punch hole cloud is a large circular or elliptical gap that are seen in cirrocumulous or altocumulous clouds.Such holes are formed when water temperature in clouds is below freezing but the water has not frozen yet due to lack of ice nucleation particles.

When ice crystals form it sets off a domino effect due to Bergeon process this leaves a large often circular hole in the cloud.
